FAQ
Q. Why should I choose MK Timber?
A. We have a reputation second-to-none in Central Illinois. The logging industry is filled with shady characters who put a higher price on profit than personal integrity and respect for the land. MK Timber works with every landowner to ensure a fair process and true management of the properties on which we work.
Q. Are you licensed?
A. We are licensed and insured timber buyers, registered in the State of Illinois and the State of Iowa.
Q. Are you insured?
A. We are licensed and insured timber buyers, registered in the State of Illinois.
Q. What are my trees worth?
A. While the markets for trees fluctuate constantly, the most valuable trees, in order of value, are Black Walnut, White Oak, and other hardwoods. As of today, we commonly see Black Walnut trees worth an average of $700 – 1,500 and White Oak trees worth an average of $300 – 500.
Q. When do I get paid?
A. We generally pay 10% upon signing of a contract. We pay the other 90% before we begin harvesting. We don’t make promising regarding split profits or creative arrangements. Our first price is our best price.
Q. Will you buy cut logs in bulk?
A. We buy cut logs in bulk from several sellers in the Midwest. If you’re interested in selling your cut logs to use, give us a call today at (309) 238-8625.
Q. How long does a harvest take?
A. The length of the harvest depends on the weather, the number of trees, and the layout of the property. It also depends on the management practices we agree upon with you (Are we mapping and installing trails for you to use on your recreational property while we’re harvesting? Are we installing creek crossings for your equipment during the harvest?). Additional work can prolong a harvest. That said, the average harvest length for us is 1-3 weeks.
Q. How does a harvest impact the rest of my timber?
A. A well-planned selective harvest results in minimal impact to the rest of the timber. We work closely with landowners to use the harvest operation to clear trails and create new habitat for forest wildlife.
Q. How can a harvest improve my timber?
A. A timber harvest can improve the quality of your timber by clearing out old growth that may inhibit new, more important growth for the area. Thinning and opening the woods allows more sunlight and moisture to reach the ground, allowing diverse plant life to flourish.
Q. What species of trees are most valuable?
A. The most valuable and commonly found species in Central Illinois is the Black Walnut. As a result, we mostly buy Black Walnut. The second most valuable and commonly found species is White Oak. And we buy a considerable amount of White Oak, as well. Other hardwoods (like other Oak species, Cherry, Hickory, etc.) can sometimes bring a fair value, but these values fluctuate over time. When appraising your timber, other hardwoods can certainly be part of the conversation.
Q. How big do my trees need to be for harvest?
A. Commonly, trees harvested are at least 12-15” in diameter. Anything under this diameter generally stays in the forest.
